How to Create an Altar Part I

When you’re on your spiritual path, you’re often guided to do things that may be unfamiliar for you.

When I was first guided to create an altar, I ignored it for a long time. It wasn’t until a year after that my life had almost fallen apart completely, and I surrendered to walk the sacred path. That day, I created my altar and I was amazed at the astounding shifts in energy that took place. Density in my bedroom was cleared. Meditation became easier. Clear guidance from my Angels of Light flowed effortlessly to me.

Why is this? Because I showed that I was ready. I was ready to listen, to show up, to do the work, and to receive.

When you’re ready to create your sacred altar, I encourage you to be open to whatever messages and guidance you receive about it. You may be a Buddhist and be called to work with Jesus. You may be Christian, but be drawn to the teachings and wisdom of Quan Yin. Be open to what your heart and Higher Self are guiding you to do. Just have faith. Live from your heart center. Be open to receiving.

Be aware that there are many negative human experiences around creating altars. These often come from past lives, either yours or your ancestors. This could be a lifetime when you were placed on altar, or where you built one and it did not serve you. Or you were punished for building one. If you get chills or parts of your body tighten when you read this, chances are good that this is a weakness somewhere in your system. It’s important to delete these weaknesses. It’s important that you’re strong to your altar.

When you’re ready to build your altar, close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Drop down into your sacred heart center, that beautiful green chakra in the center of your chest. Take a deep breath. Now imagine a beautiful white light radiating down from your Higher Self, into your crown chakra and into your heart. Breathe in this beautiful white light, and exhale it through your heart chakra.

Now check in intuitively and pray for guidance. Allow this guidance to help you see, sense, feel, or know what your sacred and beautiful altar looks like.

Some key items may grace it, including:

Air and Wind

This is most often represented with feathers or with bird spirit animals, like hawks, eagles, and feathers.

Water

Some people choose to place a bowl of fresh water on their altar every day. I prefer using sea shells, photos of the ocean, and even a bottle of holy water.

Earth

This is typically represented with crystals or rocks. You can also place a bowl of earth on your altar, but be sure to change it regularly and keep it fresh.

Fire

For many, this is represented with candles. It can also be represented with the Violet Fire or with dragons. Trust your intuition to guide you.

Protection

Your altar should include at least one protector. This can be Jesus, Buddha, Mother Mary, Archangel Michael, etc.

Spirit Animal

Many people are guided to place their spirit animal(s) on their altar. You can buy a piece of artwork of the animal or even purchase small toy versions it.

Add something from your child

When I was creating my altar, I was given the message to add something of my son’s to the altar. I chose to add his teething necklace. It’s a gentle and beautiful reminder of him, his growth, my parenthood, and our bond as mother and child.

Inspiration, Strength, and Joy

Think about objects or experiences in your life that truly make you feel blessed. If that arrowhead from a spiritual retreat is calling to you, place that on your sacred altar. If you feel divinely inspired by a certain piece of art, frame it and put it up there.

By including these items, you’re remembering your connection to God, this beautiful earth in which you reside, the Angels that help and work with you, and also yourself.

YOU are sacred. Honor that. Cherish it. Love yourself. Spend time every morning looking at your altar. Feel the gratitude and love that you have for God and His world, including you.

Unconditional Love and Light,

Lauren
