Start immediately. It’s important to read books to your child as soon as they’re born. Show them the pictures. You’ll see their eyes widen in amazement. And they’ll be looking to you for your expressions, so make sure you’re enjoying it, too!
I see many parents who simply “read” to their children, but don’t actually incorporate voices or facial expressions. Your child is a child and needs to know that life is fun. You may have dishes to do or work to catch up on, but these moments with your little one are the most important thing in the world. Be present, be joyful, and have fun!
It’s normal for young children to love reading for a few months, and then give it up for awhile.
Relax. Take a deep breath. They’re going to come back to reading.
I decided I wouldn’t force it when my little one didn’t want to sit and read books anymore. For about nine months, I continued to read to him at night. I let him play with his toys, eat his nighttime snack, and wander around the house while I read to him.
It took nine months, but now he’s back to reading and it’s his favorite thing again.
One of my friends saw me do this with my son and rolled her eyes, saying it was stupid and that I was wasting my time. I insisted I wasn’t. And I’m glad I persisted. Because now I have a two and a half year old who loves reading!
Unconditional Love and Light,
Lauren
